December, Johnny Berry was a Manchester, U. Berry built to a high standard. His frames had a good reputation, performed well, and had a recognizable style. Berry was an avid cyclist and an active member of the Manchester Wheelers. He joined the club in either or , competed in time trials through the early s, organized races, led club rides, and served as president in and 6, 19, Bentley managed the shop. Berry focused on frame building, skills that he had learned in the Manchester area from Tim Heeley frame builder at Stenton Glider and, later, Heeley Lightweight 8.
Some bike parts have a date code cast or stamped into the piece. This clearly is when the component was made and not when the bike was made, but unless the component or bike manufacturer had lots of stock lying around in inventory, the date should be a fairly good indication of the year of the bike. At least it would be the earliest date that the bike could have been made. Of course, all this assumes the bike has the original component.
The most likely components to be original are the stem, handlebars, seatpost, and brakes.

While Schwinn often had a reputation for building heavy bikes for kids, the Paramount line had a reputation for finely crafted, relatively light road bikes. That is obviously a great price. The very nice woman selling it was good natured about the low price.

The bike was a disaster–a real rust bucket–but as I tore it down, I was astounded to see that it was largely unused and almost completely original. None of the bearings had any visible wear, and even the brake pads, gears, chain, and cable sheaths were ones that came new with the bike. The only nonoriginal part was the saddle; I assume that the original leather one died a moldy death as the bike sat decaying in a series of garages.
My philosophy of old bikes probably won’t be approved by most purists. I am not interested in creating museum pieces; I have no interest in a bike I can’t ride. I don’t have the time, inclination, or energy to research any bike in detail and to determine its original configuration, down to the last lockwasher. I’ll probably never own a bike that has any real historical or artistic significance.
It’s just a bike, for chrissake, not an Amati violin. Still, I love the elegance of older bikes, and I’m fascinated by the combination of practical functionality and artistic design that they embody. That’s what should be preserved. The details are not important.

Some of the mid ‘s straight guage frames had serial numbers starting with a single letter which was towards the end of the alphabet. This new system applied to the high-end i. Reynolds frames, and involved the placing of a character at the beginning of the serial number.

Ancient Greek vase painting By convention, finely painted vessels of all shapes are called “vases”, and there are over , significantly complete surviving pieces,  giving with the inscriptions that many carry unparalleled insights into many aspects of Greek life. Sculptural or architectural pottery, also very often painted, are referred to as terracottas , and also survive in large quantities.
In much of the literature, “pottery” means only painted vessels, or “vases”. Pottery was the main form of grave goods deposited in tombs, often as “funerary urns” containing the cremated ashes, and was widely exported.

Offered below is something very rarely encountered in this day and time; four notes from the same sheet, each bearing serial number From an old time collection, as one would never see an uncut sheet of these today. There was a time many, many years ago when such rare sheets were cut apart in order to sell each individual note, as an entire sheet was next to impossible to sell.
Not so today; by any stretch of the imagination. Each note upon the sheet was given the same serial number; with plate letters distinguishing each individual note. The plate layout was as follows: Moving over to the right top of the sheet existed plate letter “G”. Even though each note possessed the same serial number; every note on the sheet could be individually identified due to the different plate letters.

Many of these timber-built structures remain standing and are still in use today, including factories, warehouses, schools, temples, and churches — some dating as far back as the seventh century. Famous examples include the Courtesy of Martin Tessler. As a result, timber has more or less been relegated for use as a material for smaller structures.

In these cases examination of the frame number — where it is, what it is, and how it is, may be of some assistance at least in allowing other specialists to hazard a guess at the true origin of the frame or machine. These publications have been invaluable in adding accuracy to the information — but even including their data there are still well over makes of possible lightweights to be confused over! The author would be grateful to know of any inaccuracies and to receive further information to make the tables more comprehensive.
For example, some BSA frames have BSA and a 3 or 4 figure number cast into the base of the BB, this is just the casting number or perhaps a model number — it is not the frame number. Nervex, the lug maker, also had their name on their BB lugs with a long design serial number. Make a note of where on the BB the number is and its orientation — for example, is it upright or inverted for reading when lifting the front wheel up with the rear wheel still on the ground? Is it central or on the left or right flange of the BB as seen from this upright view?
Some builders stamped the numbers parallel to the edge of the BB, yet others are random when compared over the years. Most builders also stamped the frame number on the steerer tube of the front forks — but you may not wish to strip the machine down for this and in any case the forks may have been changed over the years. It can be worthy of note however that as sometimes very thick layers of paint can make the main frame number difficult to read —the steerer tube number is the only reliable evidence!

See Table 2 Is it a plain serial number or does it have some preceding numbers or letters a prefix or perhaps has some numbers or letters that follow the main number a suffix? In order to be a prefix or suffix in this instance there should be a space between the number and the pre or suffix part, ot perhaps they are on a different line.
